There are many great attractions around Cheshire, all a short drive from the Wild Boar Hotel.
The castle was built by Ranulf, the 6th Earl of Chester in 1225, following his return from the crusades. It was seized by King Henry III in 1237, and remained in royal ownership until the 16th Century. During the English Civil War (1642-46) the castle was held in turn by Parliamentarians and Royalists, and played prominent role in the fighting in this part of Cheshire.
